assessment and evaluation

example 1: usability test

Description
For this assignment (IT 521), I worked with a classmate to conduct usability testing of a web authoring tool.

Rationale
The report shows how I gained experience in evaluating an electronic media for the purpose of instruction. In doing so, my partner and I examined Google sites in depth by looking at its intended audience and functions. I also gained knowledge of how to design a usability testing plan as well as how to implement it. Finally, I learned how to sift through the results and use them to make recommendations for future design improvements of the tool.

Alignment to Career Goals and Professional Standards
  • ISTE Standard 1: Visionary Leadership
  • ISTE Standard 4: Professional Development & Program Evaluation
Being able to evaluate technology tools to determine if they support instruction is a skill I need to have as an instructional technology coach. I have to be able to objectively look at tools for learning and figure out if they meet the needs of its intended audience.

example 2: assessment plan

Description
For a course in understanding online interaction (IT 566), I worked with a small group to prepare an assessment plan for a K-12 online setting.

Rationale
The assessment plan demonstrates my ability to assess learners in an online setting by using a mix of formative and summative assessments. We chose to use discussion posts with a grading rubric and brief quizzes to formatively assess our learners. To determine summative learning, we decided to use a “show what your know” portfolio assessment with a grading rubric.

Alignment to Career Goals and Professional Standards
  • ISTE Standard 2: Teaching, Learning, & Assessments
By working with a team, I was able to strengthen my abilities to “coach teachers in and model effective use of technology tools and resources to continuously assess student learning and technology literacy by applying a rich variety of formative and summative assessments aligned with content and student technology standards” (ISTE, 2011, standard 2.g).
